The name "sand dollar" comes from the shape of its body, which resembles a large coin. Besides Sand "Bucks" there are many other names for the sand dollar around the world. In Spanish the sand dollar is know as a "galleta de mar" or sea cookie. In South Africa, they are referred to as pansy shells from the five-petaled pansy flower. It is interesting to know that Sand dollars are not shells. They are animals, specifically sea urchins.
