A Hindu legend in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana recalls the creation of conchs: the god Shiva flung a trident towards the asuras(evil gods), burning them instantaneously. Their ashes flew in the sea creating conchs. Thus, the conch shell is a major Hindu article of prayer, used as a trumpet and in order to get rid of negative energy and evil spirits.
